Polynesia: Island of Myth Beyond Time

There is an island beyond the real world that few know about, which is said grant immortality to all those who have contributed to the Polynesian myth. But evil forces seek to take control of the island for their own personal greed, and to satisfy a consortium of anonymous investors who seek to take control of this island and the "island child" linked to it; because the child is the key to the soul of this secret island located beyond time. They plan to transform the secret paradise into a vacation destination for the entertainment of well-heeled tourists who afford to book a trip back in time.

A shady time-traveler employs an Asian countess who orders her henchmen, to find the island and capture the island child. The time traveler promises them modern weapons for the capture of the child.

The story begins when world famous aviatrix, Amelia Earhart, crashes in her plane on the secret island and is brought before handed the Polynesian demigod Maui, who then puts her in the care of famous painter Paul Gauguin with instructions for him to nurse her back to health. In her fever, Amelia speaks of the impending disaster that will befall the secret island and that the island child is in danger. Gauguin and his Polynesian friend Olo, accompanied by the beautiful Haumea, decide to rescue the island child.  On their way they will experience many adventures and meet many historical figures who have contributed to the myth of Polynesia. Laurin Press, 2026. Hello everyone, I am Pierangelo Boog, an artist and illustrator from Switzerland. Polynesia is my first comic based on a basic idea, similar to improvising over a familiar melody in jazz. It all started with a request from a well-known German comic writer, who sent me the first few pages of one of his manuscripts to get me on board as an illustrator. But as I looked through it, I soon realized that the detailed specifications left me with absolutely no artistic freedom.

I mentioned this in an email to my best artist friend and said I'd rather draw a comic about the South Seas, some kind of adventure story where a plane crashes on an island, this time without Harrison Ford. He wrote back to me that there was Amelia Earhart, who had disappeared in the Pacific Ocean on July 2, 1937. And so I began to research and draw the first panel, which laid the foundation for this project. Subsequently, each panel logically led to the next, and the story took its course, with the protagonists developing a life of their own and dictating what I had to draw.

No layout or preliminary sketches. When I sometimes didn't know how to proceed with the next page, I would lie down on my studio bed. Because, as I learned from a discussion with one of my art teachers at the Zurich Academy of Arts (where I studied scientific illustration for four years), inspiration cannot be forced through concentrated thinking alone! It comes unexpectedly when you are doing mundane things, such as sitting alone on the toilet or lying relaxed on your bed doing nothing, which is also work, after all. Yes, it's almost like it says in Joseph von Eichendorff's novel “Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts” (From the Life of a Good-for-Nothing); the Lord gives it to his people in their sleep.

Nevertheless, I was gripped by comic fever: drawing a panel like this is like taking a small bite, and the appetite for more came naturally. After more than 80 pages, I finally had to tell myself that enough was enough. And so here it is, my first graphic novel.
