KAWASE HASUI 2027 Calendar

In his elegant landscapes, Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) presents a nostalgic view of rural Japan from a modern, western perspective. Created during a time of rapid industrialization, his prints are focused on the natural environment. Intense blues and greens reflect the sea and the countryside, while fair skies and moonlit nights temper the mood. Twelve quiet scenes are on display in this calendar. Hasui worked in watercolor, and his sketches were transformed into woodblock prints by a skilled team at the studio of publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō. Hasui Kawase was one of 20th century Japan's most important and prolific print makers. He was a prominent designer of the shin-hanga ("new prints") movement, whose artists depicted traditional subjects with a style influenced by yōga (Western-style painting). Like many earlier ukiyo-e prints, Hasui's works were commonly landscapes, but displayed atmospheric effects and natural lighting. Hasui designed almost one thousand woodblock prints over a career that spanned nearly forty years. Towards the end of his life the Japanese government recognized him as a Living National Treasure for his contribution to Japanese culture. I'm personally a big fan of this "westernized" Japanese art. It's polished, moody, colorful -- although inspired by traditional Japanese woodblock prints, it has a more modern feel and I find Hasui's work in particular to be very serene and attractive.
