strange-mysteries-volume-1-hardcover-copy
Strange Mysteries Volume 1 Hardcover Hurt

Collects #1-5, 1951-52.

Canadian publisher Superior Comics hired the Iger shop to produce their comics, and here you have a lot of material that looks inspired by the style of Jack Kamen and even more Matt Baker. Imagine Fiction House doing horror, complete with leggy, barely-clothed ladies, and plenty of cleavage. Includes three fun sci-fi stories. In #1's "The Living Corpse" a wife has dreams about a man dead for 10 years, so her husband makes a deal with the devil to bring the corpse back to life. The corpse kidnaps his wife. The husband gets the wife back, but is shot by her. She then loses her soul to the devil. And that's just ONE story! From #5, "Blood of the Zombie" portrays a man who asks to be embalmed because a zombie colony will think that he has white blood and thus believe him to be a god. The colony of zombies makes his wife kill him, so much for that hair-brained idea. I like Superior's entire line, I think their stories were pretty good. While not on the level of EC or maybe even Harvey, they were good classic horror and are quite collectible today. Since the Iger Shop was also producing work for Fiction House, Ajax, Farrell and more publishers, titles like Voodoo and Fantastic Fears, Journey Into Fear and Strange Fantasy all have the same distinctive art style, abetted by lots of leggy girls, grisly skeletons and the undead! - Bud Although based in Canada, Superior's titles were well distributed in the U.S. and except for the location of their editorial offices, they are in every other aspect as American as any other publisher of the time. Their ads were even all U.S. based. They concentrated on horror and romance, the two most popular genres of the early 1950s. They disappeared shortly after the Comics Code deep-sixed so many other publishers. PS Artbooks says Jay Disbrow is in these, but I don't find him. Neither Overstreet nor GCD credits him.
