Part 2 will appear in the next issue of The Pulpster. Part 1 takes the story up to about 1932 when they temporarily suspended publication. The article looks at the different magazines and genres served by Fiction House, and the editors and major authors in them. I think together the two articles will serve as a pretty good in-depth history of FH. Here we learn about the development of \u003cem\u003eAction Stories, The Lariat\u003c\/em\u003e, their romance pulps, air pulps, northwestern pulps, \u003cem\u003eFight Stories\u003c\/em\u003e, and \u003cem\u003eBlack Aces\u003c\/em\u003e.\n\n\u003cem\u003eThe Vizigraph\u003c\/em\u003e is the focus of \u003cstrong\u003eSara Light-Waller‘s\u003c\/strong\u003e article. \u003cem\u003eThe Vizigraph\u003c\/em\u003e was the letter column that ran in Fiction House’s \u003cem\u003ePlanet Stories\u003c\/em\u003e starting with the second issue. Many pulp fans are not aware of the letter columns that ran in various pulp magazines, though many are very important, such as the ones in \u003cem\u003eAdventure\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eWeird Tales\u003c\/em\u003e. Unless one gets and reads the original pulps or facsimiles, you’ll miss out on them. This one sounds to also have been pretty interesting as well.\n\nFrom \u003cem\u003eJess Terrell\u003c\/em\u003e, we get two articles on the major jungle heroes of Fiction House: Ki-Gor, their long-running Tarzan clone in \u003cem\u003eJungle Stories\u003c\/em\u003e, and Sheena, who was much more successful in comics and TV than the pulps (one pulp with three stories), and who outlived Fiction House itself.\n\nFrom illustrator \u003cstrong\u003eMort Künstler\u003c\/strong\u003e, we get personal reminiscence about pulp and paperback-cover artist \u003cstrong\u003eGeorge Gross\u003c\/strong\u003e.\n\nFinally, Science Fiction Grand Master \u003cstrong\u003ePoul Anderson\u003c\/strong\u003e speaks with \u003cstrong\u003eDarrell Schweitzer\u003c\/strong\u003e on the genre in an interview from 1974.\n\nFor the rest, we get:\n\nThe “slabbing” (grading and encapsulation) of pulps from \u003cstrong\u003eDave Smith\u003c\/strong\u003e, finally coming this year from CGC — like it or hate it.\n\nThe emergance of the “weird menace” or “shudder pulps” in \u003cem\u003eDime Mystery\u003c\/em\u003e is the focus of \u003cstrong\u003eEmily Sisler’s\u003c\/strong\u003e article. This was under the editorship of Rogers Terrill, but publisher Harry Steeger thought it up, taking inspiration from the French Grand Guignol theater. This began with the October 1933 issue of \u003cem\u003eDime Mystery\u003c\/em\u003e, less than a year after it started as \u003cem\u003eDime Mystery Book Magazine\u003c\/em\u003e. There is a whole study on the genre, and many reprints from the “shudder pulps” out there.\n\n\u003cstrong\u003eTony Davis\u003c\/strong\u003e gives us a look at the creator of the Church of Satan and how his love of pulp magazines influenced him in this. While I have heard of Anton LaVey, this was an interesting look into him.\n\nFrom \u003cstrong\u003eCraig McDonald\u003c\/strong\u003e are two articles.
