The slipcase is a work of art on its own, with raised silver images, the vast ocean and clouds on one side, the head of a creature on the other. It also has a round die-cut hole to show off the book cover, as well as half-circles to make it easy to get the book in and out. Very impressive.

And the slipcased book is packed in yet another custom, clam-shell box, with additional artwork on the front, back and sides! What an amazing presentation! And just like reading Return, I was sorry to see this new novel come to an end. It's really fun, nice and long at 460 pages. Murray captures ERB's style and voice very well. John Carter finally comes into play...in a major way...but not until halfway through the novel! I could elaborate, but no more spoilers. For the first half of the book, Tarzan 1) manages to stay alive, not easy, 2) explores the outer reaches of Mars, far from civilization, and 3) begins to meet the many denizens of Mars: White Apes, a Zitidar, Thoats (which he masters riding), and Green Martians.

But using his head and the amazing strength and the leaping ability of an earthman on Mars--just as John Carter found--Tarzan is making friends, making new weapons (he lost everything, even his father's knife, when he was teleported), gaining friends and followers, and learning how to survive in a very, very hostile world that has clearly seen better days. As a lifelong fan of Burroughs’ Bronze Forest God, this is exactly the Tarzan adventure that I was hoping for! (And it’s set canonically in the original novels’ timeline about a year after the events of Tarzan and the Leopard Men, which I much appreciated.)
What I really love about this story is seeing Tarzan in savage survival mode and bringing all his super-heroic attributes to bear against incredibly daunting physical and mental challenges that Murray pits him against. Every new challenge showcases the Jungle Lord’s astounding strength (made even more powerful because of the Martian atmosphere), indomitable will and superior cunning, in ways that are imaginative and visually inspiring. Dick wrote more than one hundred short stories over the course of his career, each as mind-bending and genre-defining as his longer works. Here are ten of the best. In “Autofac,” Dick shows us one of the earliest examples (and warnings) in science fiction of self-replicating machines. “Exhibit Piece” and “The Commuter” feature Dick exploring one of his favorite themes: the shifting nature of reality and whether it is even possible to perceive the world as it truly exists. And “The Hanging Stranger” provides a thrilling, dark political allegory as relevant today as it was when Dick wrote it at the height of the Cold War.

Strange, funny, and powerful, the stories in this collection highlight a master at work, encapsulating his boundless imagination and deep understanding of the human condition. Among them he meets one who will change his life forever -- the incomparable Dejah Thoris, regal princess of the nation of Helium, captured while on a scientific mission to study the dwindling atmosphere of dying Barsoom. With the steel of his sword and the strength of his earthly muscles, John Carter will stop at nothing to free the woman who has captured his heart, even as she spurns his love. But winning liberty will be only the first challenge for the Earthman when fate throws Dejah Thoris into the clutches of Helium’s greatest enemy. Foreword by renowned fantasy and SF author Michael Moorcock.

Volume 2: After ten long years stranded on Earth, John Carter returns once again to Barsoom. But this time, he finds himself fighting for his life in the Valley Dor—the presumed Martian paradise that is in reality a violent hellscape, where legions of blood-thirsty Plant Men and four-armed great apes reward with bitter death believers who take the final pilgrimage down the sacred River Iss. Reunited with Tars Tarkas, his loyal green Martian friend, John Carter runs into the hands of the Holy Therns, the ancient cult that in secret rules all Barsoom. But even the Therns themselves fall victim to the ruthless pirates of the First Born -- and somewhere among these myriad adversaries lies John Carter’s beloved Dejah Thoris, waiting without hope beyond his reach. Foreword by award-winning SF author Kevin J. But before the door can open, the princess is spirited away by a conspiracy of her husband’s deadliest enemies. The trail leads from the steaming swamps of Kaol and Ptarth to the frigid Carrion Caves lying beyond the ice barrier that fringes the far north. There, in the domed cities of the Yellow Men, John Carter must confront the cruel Jeddak of Okar and solve the mystery of why no outsider has ever returned from the tyrant’s kingdom -- or he and Dejah Thoris will meet the same deadly fate themselves. Foreword by NASA astronaut and Navy Fighter Pilot Terrence W.
