In addition to these seminal tales there are an original foreword by modern X-Men mastermind Chris Claremont, reliving the heyday of Lee and Kirby’s foundational years, an in-depth essay by X-Men writer Fabian Nicieza, and original art, photographs, and memorabilia from the early years of X. Each page has been photographed as printed more than half a century ago, then digitally remastered using modern retouching techniques to correct problems with the era’s inexpensive, imperfect printing -- as if hot off a world-class 1960s printing press. When Marvel publisher Martin Goodman asked Stan Lee to deliver another new team book for his line of comics, he had no idea he'd be getting something like The X-Men. In fact, nobody could have imagined the extraordinary phenomenon the X-Men would eventually grow into -- not Goodman, not Lee, not even the forward-thinking futurist Jack Kirby. What they started out as was a charming, ragtag team of misfits, devised by Lee and Kirby to be mutants -- youngsters born with "X-tra" powers thrust upon them not by accidentally crossing paths with cosmic rays or a nuclear blast, but by the fate of birth -- led by a no-nonsense professor who trained them to become heroes that could protect the world from menaces, mutant and otherwise. The first years of storytelling laid the foundation for much of what has put the X-Men at the crossroads of comics and popular culture: Hounded by a public that fears and misunderstands them, mutantkind find themselves at the heart of their own civil rights struggle; Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Angel, Beast, and Iceman found safety amongst themselves despite the challenges that set them apart from others in society; and Professor Xavier lined up against his ideological foe, Magneto, who had assembled a Brotherhood of Evil Mutants to take the fight for their self-preservation directly to humankind. Along the way, Lee and Kirby -- who were on fire taking comics into the Marvel Age -- introduced a menagerie of villains and supporting characters that would become mainstays of Marvel and its lore: the super-powered siblings Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch; the formidable Blob; the unstoppable Juggernaut; the jungle dweller from the Savage Land, Ka-Zar; the demigod from the stars, the Stranger; and Bolivar Trask and his army of mutant-hunting Sentinels. And as Lee and Kirby gave way to new talents so they could move on to new corners of the Marvel Universe, Atlas era art veteran Werner Roth teamed with writing newcomer and future X-Men legend Roy Thomas to begin their long run on the title. "Comics -- because they involve stories of conflict and change; because they often appeal to us first in childhood -- invite identification: we read them in search of ourselves, or our future selves. Illustrated by masters Will Eisner and Reed Crandall, these stories capture the fearless aviator and his squadron at their most dynamic, soaring into battle against wartime threats and larger-than-life villains. A true landmark of Golden Age comics, preserved here with care by PS Artbooks.

In 2001, the DC Archives series collected the one-and-only Blackhawk volume. It collected just the Blackhawk stories from Military Comics #1-17, 1941-42. While it may not have proved a good enough seller for DC to continue, it was one of OUR most popular DC Archives and it did quickly go out of print.

Other than the low-rent reprints to be found on the internet, this is the first time Blackhawk is featured in a collection the series deserves. Will Eisner is credited as one of the creators of Blackhawk, along with Charles Cuidera. But Reed Crandall is the artist most identified with this heroic team.

This was Reed’s #1 best-selling feature from the early 1940s until he left the title to join EC around 1952. But Blackhawk had staying power and outlasted almost every other super hero and team title of the Golden Age. When the Quality Group went bust in 1956, Blackhawk and G.I. Combat were two prime titles that DC bought and continued, with great success, all the way into the 1970s. And co-creator Charles Cuidera remained active on the title into the DC era.

Blackhawk was as much an airplane strip as a team story. The group started out flying massive Grumman planes with twin engines. Stories often started from the famous Blackhawk Island somewhere in the Atlantic. The team was made up of characters of all ethnicities; Blackhawk in fact was Polish, made a refugee when the Nazis invaded Poland in 1940, before the U.S. entered the war. The team fought the good fight against Germany and Japan until 1945.

Later on, into the 1950s, the team switched to jets and took on the “Red Menace,” Communists and dictators, with repeating villains like Killer Shark, and destructive and wild war machines, like The War Wheel, The Flying Tank Platoon, The Fire Wheel, Flying Submarines and Flying Cannons, and much more. DC took over the title with issue #108, keeping the same artists and writers for a number of years.

Additional artists include Bob Powell, Max Elkan, Ernie Hart, and Harry Sable.

As was common with Golden Age publishers, titles went through name changes to save on postal deposits. Thus, Blackhawk Comics first issue was #9 – issues #1-8 were Uncle Sam Quarterly. However, meanwhile Blackhawk was the cover and lead feature in Military Comics for all 44 issues, then with another name change it continued as the lead feature in Modern Comics from #44 to 102.

Needless to say, Blackhawk was one of Quality Group’s most successful titles. It remained a solid seller for DC until they, sadly, ran it into the ground towards the end, with bad editors and worse stories. But it’s been revived a time or two; artist Howard Chaykin did a wonderful limited series and his love for the series is very clear. Following MAD's creation by Kurtzman, the core artists – Will Elder, Wally Wood, Jack Davis and at first John Severin – all found themselves inspired by the opportunity to turn from horror or adventure comics to humor, turning out some of the best work of their comics careers – and going on to mainstream success from the name recognition that MAD gave them. In 1952, the first MAD comic was created as a way for Harvey Kurtzman to do something quick and easy in between his elaborately researched war comics for EC. Against all odds, sales success soon turned it into his main job and inspired him to expand from goofy parodies of other comics into even zanier satires that revealed to the kids of America how hypocritical the adults, and the entire structure of society and capitalism around them, truly were. By 1955, Kurtzman was ready to move on to grown-up magazine publishing – but seized an opportunity to convert MAD into a magazine first. With the same stable of artists, and a few new contributors from TV (Ernie Kovacs, Roger Price), radio (Stan Freberg) and newspapers, he converted the color comic to a black-and-white magazine that aimed its satire at kids and adults alike – and went on to even greater success. Kurtzman himself, and most of his artists, moved on after five issues. Those five issues (#24-28), alongside the initial 23 comics, are given their first complete reprint here – as well as two legacy issues containing work Kurtzman left behind, plus extensive notes, and historical essays. These are the issues that shaped the sensibilities of just about all American humor for decades to come – finally available in one place for the first time!

Rush Service and International shipping could require an additional charge.

It is considered to be one of the most important and influential publications to emerge from the "pulp" era of the 1920's and '30s, introducing readers to the strange and wonderful works of Robert E. Patriotic, but also subtler, darker and more sinister than the familiar costumed hero titles, the spy genre is a little-seen aspect of Atlas/Marvel’s deep publishing history.

Shortly after launching his men’s adventure line of comic books in 1949 (and just before he published his first war title), Atlas publisher Martin Goodman found, in the middle ground between crime and men’s adventure, the sneakier, conspiratorial sub-genre of spy comics. While Bernard Krigstein’s groundbreaking work at EC Comics has been reprinted numerous times, his substantially larger output for Atlas has been unfairly neglected. The 78 stories in this volume – the vast majority restored from original photostats – will fully rectify that oversight and provide a greater understanding of the achievement of this often-misunderstood graphic-storytelling pioneer.

Krigstein was the only Golden Age artist with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, and he approached the black-and-white idiom of comics from the perspective of a student dissecting the drawings of the old masters — in this case those old masters included Jack Kirby, Mort Meskin, Alex Raymond, Jerry Robinson, and many others. Already a seasoned comic book veteran when he arrived in mid-1951, Krigstein’s two-year tenure at Atlas can be seen as a vital bridge to his artistic maturity. Story by story, page by page, he stretches and refines the Atlas house style expected of its artists to its outer limits, then defies that convention to forge the personal aesthetic he’ll continue to refine at EC.

After EC’s collapse in 1956, Krigstein returned to Atlas to create his final body of work in comics: 29 short-form experiments demonstrating the infinite possibilities inherent in the art of graphic narrative. “I used them as a medium for dramatizing the breakdown technique, to show the limitless ways that a comic book story could unfold.
