The subjects here feature beautiful women and highly ornate borders and designs.\n\nLouis Chalon, 1866-1940, was born in Paris and studied with Jules Lefevre and Boulanger. He exhibited vast classically inspired paintings in the Salons of the Societe de Artistes Francais where he was awarded Honorable Mention in 1885 and 1898, a Third Class Medal in 1891 and Honorable Mention at the Expositions Universelles of 1889 and 1900. He supplied many illustrations to the periodicals \u003cem\u003eLa Vie Parisienne, L'Illustration\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eFigaro Illustré\u003c\/em\u003e, as well as illustrating several books, including works by Rabelais, Boccaccio, and Balzac.\n\nChalon also worked as a goldsmith and silversmith and executed sumptuous costumes. While experimenting with wax figures in 1898 (the year these plates appeared in \u003cem\u003eFigaro\u003c\/em\u003e), he discovered the pleasures of sculpture, to which he was to devote much of the rest of his life.\n\nThe first and fourth scan here show some but not all of two plates--these pictures are too big and too detailed to do them justice. So the second and third scans are details, in this case just the corner of two of the plates. The ornate, Art Nouveau detail on these is just phenomenal. Brangwyn, 1867-1956, had an excellent eye for the divinity of the working man and the hardiness of humanity. This superbly produced portfolio, complete with a gorgeous hardcover box in maroon imitation leather, features all 14 large scale full page artworks printed by letterpress on custom 80lb stock.\n\nThe portfolio-box is blind-embossed and opens up with four complete flaps, to reveal a thick collection of plates AND commentary by \u003cstrong\u003eDr. Libby Horner\u003c\/strong\u003e. Dr. Horner discusses Brangwyn's incredible career and how these could NOT have been done early in his working years. Also reproduced as plates over four pages, in letterpress. This is a product of his deep and long experience as one of the most successful artists in England--his disillusionment with the world War he'd recently gone through--and his own deep religious beliefs.\n\nHe brings to life the stations of the cross, normally only seen in Catholic churches, often in sculpted works or a series of pictures. Here he humanizes Jesus and all the people around him, as he carries the cross on his long journey to his final death.\n\nYou don't have to be religious to enjoy this, but that is probably the reason that has prevented this from being a sellout. I maintain that it is the most beautiful production that publisher Manual Auad has ever done. I'm a long time fan of Brangwyn's art, but I'm first to admit he is either unknown or forgotten by a great many today. Strangely enough, Manual was instrumental in helping artist Alfredo Alcala to find a career in American comic books (he was born and first worked in the Philipines). And Alcala practically worshipped Brangwyn's artwork, spending every spare dollar to get all his original books.\n\nI'm not religious myself, but to me it doesn't matter. This is fine art, powerful, captivating. Brangwyn was incredibly popular in his day, and for good reason. You can see it here, and you can also see how he was a STRONG influence on subsequent artists, the most evident being the master Dean Cornwell himself.\n\nAuad Publishing has done fine books on Alex Toth and Franklin Booth, Al Parker and Albert Dorne..but this is by far their most ambitious and exquisitely-produced project. And at this price, it is really, really a steal. But World War I brought an end to this wonderful era; so after 1918, this market abruptly disappeared. Dulac did create several more books in the following years, but nothing like his earlier work. So given the opportunity to have his work entering the households of millions of American homes (he was and remained a British artist, living in England), he embraced the opportunity and produced much of his finest work. Bill had the largest collection of comic art in the whole country, although I didn’t realize it at the time. He had all the Dulac \u003cem\u003eAmerican Weeklies\u003c\/em\u003e lying flat in his garage. Bill allowed us to remove the covers and have \nthem professionally photographed. After Bill passed on in 2011, his entire seven-ton collection was removed to the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum at the Ohio State University.\n\nThe photographers provided us with transparencies used to make the printing plates back in the days before digital photography. We contacted many publishers, but no one was interested in such a large\nfull-color production. Reluctantly, we shelved the project, and Ann published her Dulac Bibliography in 1995.\n\nThanks to the digital photography revolution, I was able to restore the illustrations and publish this edition, as well as \u003cem\u003eThe American Weekly Covers of Edmund Dulac 1924-1951 100th Anniversary edition\u003c\/em\u003e in 2024.
