In these stories, Wonder Woman travels from Paradise Island to Man’s World, where she battles both common criminals and supervillains like Cheetah and her first nemesis, the Baroness Von Gunther. Her magic bracelets and lasso of truth stop injustice, but usually not before she is tied up again and again, one of Marston's favorite tropes. These stories introduce the mythology of Wonder Woman as she battles the powers of evil, from crooked business owners to Nazi spies. The stories are fun and different, not falling into the typical cliches of many of the Golden Age heroes.

Marston's undeclared wife, and later a female assistant, wrote many of these stories and they have a women's viewpoint, to be honest, rarely seen in other comics.

They have a charm and naiveté that is fun. Never before have they been collected. Between 1948 and 1951, Kelly drew thirty-five issues of The Adventures of Peter Wheat, a sixteen page comic book given away to bakeries to promote Peter Wheat bread. The stories were fairy tales starring Peter Wheat, an elf-sized boy who lived in a hollow tree on the edge of a wheat field where he and the Little Folk battled Dragonel, Queen of the Hornets.

While created with kids in mind the mythology spun in these stories is timeless. “Coupled with Kelly's incredible artwork, this series of stories, which run in arcs, are indispensable in Walt Kelly's canon of work,” commented Dr. Thomas Andrae, editor of this series. The Peter Wheat production history was written by Walt Kelly biographer Steve Thompson for this volume.

Kelly loved doing fairy tales, and his first comics work was about tiny Lilliputians in New Comics in 1935. His work for Dell's fabulous Fairy Tale Parade is a high point of both his creativity and the world of Golden Age comics. He also further honed his skills working for the Disney studios on Snow White, Pinocchio, The Reluctant Dragon and Dumbo.

Just as his work for Dell was diminishing and Pogo was taking off as a comic strip, he was hired to develop a new series for Baker's Associates to promote Peter Wheat Bread and other baked goods. These 16-page stories were constructed as serials, taking place in a lush forest filled with Rackham-esque trees, and peopled by animals and insects who all talked with Peter. Peter becomes the savior of the "little folk". Their enemies were hornet knights, ruled by the nefarious Grand Wizard and his beautiful daughter Dragonel, who eventually is won over to Peter's side and becomes his close companion. (Culled from Thomas Andrae’s excellent introduction.) A second feature talks about Peter as Advertising as Art, with examples of the rare Peter Wheat circus, punch out characters and cool advertising pieces.

"The weird thing about Peter What is that he was awesome. He was a toddler the size of a louse...but his adventures were swordclashing killing sprees. He wasn't prancing through meadows and singing about the pep you get from enriched wheat flour. He was punching birds in the face and driving axes into hamsters. There was no whimsy in his fighting style -- he was all business...he was the most powerful 2-inch creature on the planet." -Stephen Thompson

The original comics were giveaways and today are extremely scarce, which is one reason why it's taken seven years to put together volume 2.

Note: A hardcover edition of this was announced for publication in 2020 but was never published. Words cannot do the visuals justice. It is a book with images to pour over.

Arkham, 1933. Professor Dyer, a prominent geologist, learns that a scientific expedition will soon leave for Antarctica following in the footsteps of the journey which he himself had made in 1931. In the hope of dissuading the attempt, Dyer decides to make a full account of the tragic events he had survived, this time without omitting the passages which he had kept silent about on his return, for fear of being taken for a madman.

Two years earlier, ships chartered by Miskatonic University had landed on the frozen continent at the start of the Antarctic summer, and the group of four professors and sixteen students set to work immediately. The expedition biologist, Professor Lake, left with several members of the team to follow a promising fossil track. After just a few days, he announced by radio that he had discovered astonishing specimens of an unknown ancient species, before stopping all communication after a terrible storm.

Guessing the worst, Dyer went to their rescue the next day. VOYSEY Architect, Designer, Individualist

A leading figure in the British Arts and Crafts movement, C.F.A. Voysey (1857-1941) could easily have made a career out of pattern design alone, for his ingenious textiles and wall coverings in fresh, clear colors won him international acclaim. His wallpapers and textiles, in particular, reveal his complex personality and his lifelong love of England's flora and fauna. By the mid-1890s, however, he also was hailed as one of Britain's most innovative architects.

For the small country houses that were his specialty, he rejected the lavish ornamentation and historical trappings so beloved by the Victorians, relying instead on simple, expressive forms and materials. His influence on the field of architecture cannot be overstated. As one critic noted in 1927, “Voysey . . . set architects in a new relation to their work. It is not only the things he did, but more particularly the spirit in which he addressed himself to his tasks, which places architects and architecture in his debt.”

Like other Arts and Crafts practitioners, Voysey believed that no aspect of a house was too small to merit the architect's attention. Even by this standard his versatility was astonishing, encompassing all manner of furniture, cabinetry, fixtures, and floor and wall coverings. Behind literally every one of these elements -- from the shape of a clothes hook to the sweep of a roofline -- lay a strong and unorthodox spiritual philosophy that often set Voysey at odds with others in his profession, even as he rose to become a leading force among the architects and designers of his time. It was his belief that a reverent observation of the natural world might hasten humanity's spiritual evolution. Today his images are as beloved as they were then.

Anne Stewart O'Donnell traces Voysey's extraordinary creative output through his professional career while painting a vivid picture of Voysey the man. More than sixty-five full-color architectural and design drawings and historical black-and-white photographs illuminate the individualism of this singular artist.

This book profiles Voysey's entire body of work, from his architectural designs for cottage houses to his interior designs for furniture, metalwork, wall coverings, and textiles. And it was pure horror, with Dr. Frankenstein desperately trying to kill his own creation, who's out creating mayhem and murder. Then a new character comes along to track the monster. And The Black Owl, Yank and Doodle, Dr. Frost and other heroes of Prize Comics cross over in a rare instance of blending strips. These are the very rarest episodes and this volume was long delayed while the publisher located copies to use.

It was Briefer's work that may have caused the creature to be actually named as Frankenstein instead of the nameless monstrosity from Shelley's novel. Stories are split between the twin stools of humor and horror, (these early ones in this volume are pretty much straight horror until just the last couple episodes).

Briefer's tales are absorbing and unsettling in equal parts. Most of the humorous material has already been reprinted, though not necessarily in order nor in total. And then when the horror comics craze began at the end of the 1940s, Briefer again changed the character back to a horror strip, albeit with him mostly doing good (by wiping out extremely bad people, who deserved their fate, with no judge or jury in sight). Those are great stories also.

The interview with Briefer is a hoot, he's a character himself. These issues of Prize Comics are today incredibly rare and sell for multiples of guide. I find it very interesting that the Prize characters like the Black Owl, who was drawn by Jack Kirby in a couple issues, crossed over into the Frankenstein strip. The book shows the complete story of Giger’s life and art, his sculptures, film design (the Alien series, Species, Dark Star, Poltergeist, etc), and iconic album covers as well as the heritage he left us in his own artist’s museum and self-designed bar in the Swiss Alps. In an in-depth essay, Giger scholar Andreas J. Hirsch plunges into the themes of the artist’s oeuvre while an extensive biography draws on contemporary quotes and Giger’s own statements.

Swiss artist HR Giger (1940–2014) is most famous for his creation of the space monster in Ridley Scott’s 1979 horror sci-fi film Alien, which earned him an Oscar. Yet this was just one of the most popular expressions of Giger’s biomechanical arsenal of creatures, which consistently merged hybrids of human and machine into images of haunting power and dark psychedelia. The visions drew on demons of the past, as well as evoking mythologies for the future. Above all, they gave expression to the collective fears and fantasies of his age: fear of the atom, of pollution and wasted resources, and of a future in which our bodies depend on machines for survival.

“At its essence, Giger’s art digs down into our psyches and touches our very deepest primal instincts and fears. His art stands in a category of its own. The proof of this lies in the intensity of his work and imagination, which I can only compare to Hieronymus Bosch and Francis Bacon in their powers to provoke and disturb.” ―Ridley Scott

This devoted compendium to the female derriere packs a whole lot of big booty into one petite treat of a book.
