The subjects here feature beautiful women and highly ornate borders and designs.\n\nLouis Chalon, 1866-1940, was born in Paris and studied with Jules Lefevre and Boulanger. He exhibited vast classically inspired paintings in the Salons of the Societe de Artistes Francais where he was awarded Honorable Mention in 1885 and 1898, a Third Class Medal in 1891 and Honorable Mention at the Expositions Universelles of 1889 and 1900. He supplied many illustrations to the periodicals \u003cem\u003eLa Vie Parisienne, L'Illustration\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eFigaro Illustré\u003c\/em\u003e, as well as illustrating several books, including works by Rabelais, Boccaccio, and Balzac.\n\nChalon also worked as a goldsmith and silversmith and executed sumptuous costumes. While experimenting with wax figures in 1898 (the year these plates appeared in \u003cem\u003eFigaro\u003c\/em\u003e), he discovered the pleasures of sculpture, to which he was to devote much of the rest of his life.\n\nThe first and fourth scan here show some but not all of two plates--these pictures are too big and too detailed to do them justice. So the second and third scans are details, in this case just the corner of two of the plates. The ornate, Art Nouveau detail on these is just phenomenal. Here he humanizes Jesus and all the people around him, as he carries the cross on his long journey to his final death.\n\nYou don't have to be religious to enjoy this, but that is probably the reason that has prevented this from being a sellout. I maintain that it is the most beautiful production that publisher Manual Auad has ever done. I'm a long time fan of Brangwyn's art, but I'm first to admit he is either unknown or forgotten by a great many today. Strangely enough, Manual was instrumental in helping artist Alfredo Alcala to find a career in American comic books (he was born and first worked in the Philipines). And Alcala practically worshipped Brangwyn's artwork, spending every spare dollar to get all his original books.\n\nI'm not religious myself, but to me it doesn't matter. This is fine art, powerful, captivating. Brangwyn was incredibly popular in his day, and for good reason. You can see it here, and you can also see how he was a STRONG influence on subsequent artists, the most evident being the master Dean Cornwell himself.\n\nAuad Publishing has done fine books on Alex Toth and Franklin Booth, Al Parker and Albert Dorne..but this is by far their most ambitious and exquisitely-produced project. Barry drew \u003cem\u003eFlash Gordon\u003c\/em\u003e for an amazing 49 years, until 1990. For that reason, many modern comics fans have not seen his work, unless you kept up with the strip in the papers. Unlike so many other comics artists, Barry didn't return to comic books--ever.\n\nRick Norwood (\u003cem\u003eComics Review, Prince Valiant American Epic\u003c\/em\u003e) provides a long, informative, and well-illustrated introduction. It explains all this and more. He notes how prior to 1950, space fantasy was pretty primitive and not based on science. After the film \u003cem\u003eDestination Moon \u003c\/em\u003eand the advent of writers like Robert Heinlein, that all changed. \u003cem\u003eFlash Gordon\u003c\/em\u003e changed too, giving the strip far more realism but still the wonderful adventure we all love to read and see.\n\nNorwood speculates that artist \u003cstrong\u003ePaul Norris\u003c\/strong\u003e and Dan's brother \u003cstrong\u003eSy Barry\u003c\/strong\u003e may have assisted here.
