In the 1920s, after the horrors of the First World War, a kind of madness gripped French society that no authority could stop. One aspect of this was the clandestine porn films that were shown in the back rooms of booksellers and whorehouses. Actors costumed as priests and nuns, ballet dancers, satyrs, apes, monks or bellboys enacted sex dramas that foreshadowed contemporary porn cinema.
