SYMBOLISM
By Nathalia Brodskaïa.
Symbolism appeared in Europe between the 1880s and the beginning of the twentieth century. The Symbolists were fascinated with ancient mythology and attempted to escape the reign of rational thought imposed by science. They wished to transcend the world of the visible in order to obtain pure thought while flirting with the limits of the subconscious. With images that are haunting and serene, artists such as Gustave Moreau, Fernand Knopff, Félicien Rops and Edward Burne-Jones, drew on mysticism, mythology and fantasy worlds for their inspiration.
