RUSSIAN LEGENDS: Folk Tales and Fairy Tales
Text by David Jackson, Patty Wageman, Ellen Rutten, Marija Valjaeva, Sijbolt Noorda.
Highly Recommended
A brilliant new art book devoted to rarely seen Russian artists of Folk Tales and Fairy Tales. Nearly 200 full color reproductions, entirely from the original paintings and drawings, based on a monumental exhibit in the Netherlands. Most enthusiasts of book illustration know of Ivan Bilibin, whose early 1900s depictions of witches, warriors and legends have been reprinted many times. He's here, but with reproduction putting all previous collections to shame.

But then there are full, rich chapters on the very artists who inspired Bilibin and often dwarfed him in popularity: Vasnetsov, Nicholas Roerich, Vasili Kandinsky, Elena Polenova and Michail Vroebel. Vasnetsov is a monumental talent, creating stunning every bit as good what Pre-Raphaelites like Waterhouse and Burne-Jones were doing their own legends in England. Roerich reminds us very much of the greatest name in Swedish mythic art, Akseli Gallen-Kallela.

This also includes summaries of the depicted fairytales. And it begins with excellent overviews of the entire art movement between about 1880 and 1918. Some of the works included are book illustrations, others large paintings on canvas. A great resource for understanding how and why Russian artists utilized fairytale imagery, this also serves as an introduction to the repeating themes and humor in the stories.

I've loved and collected Bilibin's work for many years. The art here has given me an entirely new perspective Russian fantasy art. Here I've been introduced to artists little known and completely unknown to me, whose work is as wonderful as anything produced in the West by the likes of Rackham, Dulac, and the late Pre-Raphaelites, all of whom were contemporaries to their Russian counterparts! Don't miss this. -Bud

About Bud

I've been actively collecting, buying and selling now since 1968. I received a San Diego Comic-Con Inkpot Award in 1994. I am in Fifty Who Made DC Great (1985) , Founders of Comics Fandom (2010), Comics: Between the Panels (1998), etc.

I opened my first comic store with six partners in 1968, co-owned a chain of seven comic stores from 1972-1988, and distributed comics and specialty items from seven warehouses in four states until I sold that portion of the business to Diamond Comic Distributors in 1988.

I've exhibited at every San Diego Comic Con since the first in 1970. I've twice been on the Spectrum Jury panel and am on the advisory board, I've helped publishers assemble books using my own collection as source material, and I provide input or advice to publishers on new projects.

I have never stopped collecting and learning about comics and art history. I'm pleased that my enthusiasm and interest can help me to better introduce customers to new as well as vintage artists and collections. I use "Recommended," "Highly Recommended," and "Our Highest Recommendation" to show my personal endorsement and enthusiasm for items that I am most excited about.
