LOST LIGHTHOUSES
By Tim Harrison and Ray Jones.
Stories and Images of America's Vanished Lighthouses.
This tribute to lighthouses provides rare photographs, facts and first-hand accounts of the rise and fall of nearly 150 of America's most historic lost light towers. Including pictures and stories on Tucker's Island Lighthouse in New Jersey, Alcatraz Lighthouse in California, the Cape Henlopen Lighthouse of Delaware and many others. Over the last three centuries more than 1,600 lighthouses were built to mark America's shores, today, more than half of them are gone. Whether they were bowled over by storms or simply grew old and collapsed, their story is here. Note: Remainder mark.

I've always had a fascination with lighthouses. While it can be a lonely job, isolated on a peninsula or a tiny island, to keep the light going every night...it can also suddenly be life threatening or the stuff heroes are made of. Stories of famous shipwrecks and daring rescues, saving lost souls from the teeth of storms. Often early lighthouses themselves were destroyed in massive storms, until the builders learned how best to make them safe.
Here are those stories, accompanied by period pictures of each legendary house.
