JAMES McNEILL WHISTLER
By Patrick Chaleyssin.
Whistler (1834-1903), an American painter who lived abroad and befriended all the great painters of his day in Paris, was truly an original and he won the admiration of his fellow artists and of connoisseurs. This volume is both a collection of his paintings and a biography. People have called him a Modernist before his time, he was also one of the first artists to become interested in Japanese prints and the new forms that they introduced. He painted with simplicity and beauty and he especially enjoyed portraits. He also produced magnificent etchings, which he was the first to engrave directly from life.
