This unique self-published magazine's fourth issue focuses on Mexican comic books, bad Mexican comic books in particular. Ten to 15 years ago, Mexico was the biggest per capita distributor of comic books in the world. These comics, called historietas, were often traditional and right-minded. But no longer--to combat plunging sales, publishers now demand that artists and writers pack their comics with drugs, guns and lots of skin.
Included are well over 100 full-color illustrations, many full page, from these no-holds-barred comics, as well as some sketches and line art. Each piece is accompanied by title, issue number, date, publisher, writer and artist. Raeburn's text dissects these "ghetto librettos," often full of drugs and violence but, surprisingly, rarely explicit nudity, detailing the artists and publishers who create them, as well as the government's attempts to stop them. Includes a cover gallery of Mexican comics with dozens of color reproductions and Mexican "adult" ads on the back cover.
