ILLUSTRATING MODERN LIFE: The Golden Age of American Illustration from the Kelly Collection
Edited by Richard Kelly, David Apatoff and Michael Zakian.
Our Highest Recommendation
A deluxe hardcover featuring 60 original paintings and drawings, produced by award-winning Flesk Publications, to accompany an exhibit at Pepperdine University. It features the Golden Age of American Illustration: 1880 to 1930, when revolutions in printing technology and mass mailing resulted in a meteoric rise of new illustrated magazines and books. Publishers and advertisers turned to illustrators to create eye-catching, dramatic work that would appeal to a growing public of modern consumers. Richard Kelly has for many years found the finest examples of each artist's work and we are now the beneficiaries.

These powerful works may just offer the finest quality reproduction ever achieved on each--all are full page, newly scanned with every tiny detail exquisitely revealed--each directly reproduced from the original drawing or painting. Here we find Howard Pyle (4 pieces), N. C. Wyeth (5), J. C. Leyendecker (7), Maxfield Parrish (2), Harvey Dunn (5), and Norman Rockwell.

But also here are their fellow artists whose work we see all to rarely: Frank Schoonover, Mead Schaeffer (4), Jessie Willcox Smith, Sarah Stillwell, Coles Phillips, E.M. Jackson (3), John Held, Jr., E.F. Ward, A.B. Wenzell and Saul Tepper (2). And here too are Fisher, Gibson, Flagg, Dean Cornwell (7), Joseph Clement Coll, Harrison Cady, W.T. Benda, McClelland Barclay (2)--and many others.

Pyle, regarded as the father of American illustration, invented the quintessential pirate character that still inspires movies over a century later. His student N. C. Wyeth (father of Andrew Wyeth) gained national fame for his paintings done for the Scribner's Illustrated Classics, still in print today. Leyendecker invented new urbane and stylish figures that captured the knowing sophistication of the modern era. 20 page introduction includes an interview with Kelly.

About Bud

I've been actively collecting, buying and selling now since 1968. I received a San Diego Comic-Con Inkpot Award in 1994. I am in Fifty Who Made DC Great (1985) , Founders of Comics Fandom (2010), Comics: Between the Panels (1998), etc.

I opened my first comic store with six partners in 1968, co-owned a chain of seven comic stores from 1972-1988, and distributed comics and specialty items from seven warehouses in four states until I sold that portion of the business to Diamond Comic Distributors in 1988.

I've exhibited at every San Diego Comic Con since the first in 1970. I've twice been on the Spectrum Jury panel and am on the advisory board, I've helped publishers assemble books using my own collection as source material, and I provide input or advice to publishers on new projects.

I have never stopped collecting and learning about comics and art history. I'm pleased that my enthusiasm and interest can help me to better introduce customers to new as well as vintage artists and collections. I use "Recommended," "Highly Recommended," and "Our Highest Recommendation" to show my personal endorsement and enthusiasm for items that I am most excited about.
