THE HEAP Volume 1
By Dan Barry, Carmine Infantino, Leonard Starr, Arthur Peddy, Frank Bolle & others. Foreword by Roy Thomas.
Recommended
Collected Works. Limited, 1,674! 1942-48.
Swamp monsters may have their beginnings in fairy tales and mythology, but here we have the very first continuing feature to appear in comics. The Heap began his career in 1942, in a Skywolf story in Air Fighters Comics (soon to become Airboy Comics). He was actually a German fighter pilot who's plane crash and sunk into a swamp in Poland. Mud, muck and vegetation slowly transformed him, alive but not alive, into a monstrosity that now shambled around, mute and near-mindless. Always encountering conflicts he somehow always wound up on the right side, whether fighting other monsters or bad people. He never got his own comic, but he thrived in the back pages of the long-running Airboy Comics.

What's amazing is the line of talent that contributed to The Heap's stories. And then look at the characters The Heap may have inspired. Swamp Thing is the most obvious, but there was also Solomon Grundy in Batman stories, loads of Lee and Kirby muck monsters in the early 1960s, then Man-Thing, It and others.

Here are 24 complete stories, from 1942 to 1948. Includes an outstanding, full-illustrated intro by Roy Thomas, 12 pages that examines Muck Monsters from sci-fi novels to, yes, The Incredible Hulk! Outstanding new cover painting by Mike Ploog. This is the first of a three volumes set that will collect the complete Heap stories. From the fine new British publisher, PS Art Books, who is collecting many never-before-collected pre-code horror titles from Harvey Comics and others.

About Bud

I've been actively collecting, buying and selling now since 1968. I received a San Diego Comic-Con Inkpot Award in 1994. I am in Fifty Who Made DC Great (1985) , Founders of Comics Fandom (2010), Comics: Between the Panels (1998), etc.

I opened my first comic store with six partners in 1968, co-owned a chain of seven comic stores from 1972-1988, and distributed comics and specialty items from seven warehouses in four states until I sold that portion of the business to Diamond Comic Distributors in 1988.

I've exhibited at every San Diego Comic Con since the first in 1970. I've twice been on the Spectrum Jury panel and am on the advisory board, I've helped publishers assemble books using my own collection as source material, and I provide input or advice to publishers on new projects.

I have never stopped collecting and learning about comics and art history. I'm pleased that my enthusiasm and interest can help me to better introduce customers to new as well as vintage artists and collections. I use "Recommended," "Highly Recommended," and "Our Highest Recommendation" to show my personal endorsement and enthusiasm for items that I am most excited about.
