Generations have grown up with Mickey Mouse; he's a character as familiar as our own families. And though Walt Disney was the creator of the character and his voice, it was Ub Iwerks who brought the mouse to life.
As head animator at Disney Studios, Iwerks shaped the character and led the direction of Disney animation. His talent inspired many other artists, and he mentored greats like Chuck Jones and Friz Freeling. A consummate creator, he invented technologies that included the 360 degree motion picture and screen, optical printer and traveling matte system. He was a self-taught photographer, director, engineer and artist whose career includes more than 200 film credits.
This intimate portrait of his life and works, co-authored by his granddaughter, gives us insight into a man whom most of us have never heard of, but have known all our lives. Included are 16 pages of outstanding vintage photos of Iwerks at the studios and with his fellow animators, and 1929 storyboard drawings for Mickey in "Karnival Kid."
