FANTASY AND FAITH: The Art of Gustave Doré
Edited by Eric Zafran.
Doré (1832-1883) is best known as one of the finest book illustrators of the 19th century, and a painter and sculptor. He captured the wrath of nature of the Scriptures, and also illustrated for children. The haunting illustrations and romantic imagery influenced much of early twentieth century pop culture, from Cecil B. DeMille to Walt Disney. His illustrated Bible, first published in 1865, appeared in over 700 editions and in its day was the most successful book in the world. This illustrated volume focuses on his major works and assesses his impact on collectors and museums.
