EDWARD S. CURTIS
By Barry Pritzker.
Curtis (1868-1952) spent 30 years documenting what he considered to be the traditional way of life for Indians living in the trans-Mississippi West. He took more than 40,000 photographs, collected more than 350 traditional Indian tales, and made more than 10,000 sound recordings of Indian speeches and music. He also made a full-length motion picture, crossed America by train at least 125 times and mined for gold using his own patented equipment. His magnum opus, The North American Indian, was 20 volumes. This collection of 75 full-page photographic plates and short biography is fascinating.
