CYANIDE AND SIN: Visualizing Crime in 50s America
By Will Straw.
Highly Recommended
This is a history of the true-crime magazine in America, with emphasis on its visual content. Packed with 200 magazine cover images, this also includes a brief essay which traces the evolution of the crime magazine genre. True crime magazines offered up a distorted universe dominated by female criminals or youthful, sexualized female victims. The vast majority of images were photos, but the origins of these photos were diverse and their status as credible documentation typically uncertain. Some were genuine images of crimes or criminals, supplied by local police forces, many others were staged with models to imitate official photos, or posed in studio re-enactments of crimes and large numbers were paintings crafted to look like photos.
