As automobile culture emerged in California, entrepreneurs used bizarre and quirky archetecture to attract the attention of passing motorists. Scholar Hermann has spent 20 years collecting photos, memorabilia and information about such unofficial landmarks as the Doggie Diner (featuring a giant dog head), the hat-shaped Brown Derby restaurant and the Twin Barrel Ice Cream Shop. Spanning from the jazzy 20's all the way to the gaudy 70's, many of these buildings are long gone, but their novelty, innovation and kitsch are still inspirational today.
