BUSCEMA: A Life in Sketches
Edited by Emilio Soltero.
Showcasing the preliminary sketches and creative process of John Buscema (1927-2002). The majority of these images were created as rough sketches, many which were scanned from the backs of original comic art pages (where he often created his roughs). Soltero gives the reader an opportunity to observe Buscema's draftsmanship and diversity of subject matter, including cowboys, wizards, warriors, maidens, animals and Conan. Commentary by Sal Buscema, Neal Adams, and Kevin Nowlan.

An excellent look at the artistry of John Buscema. Interestingly, many of the images featured here were done by the artist on the backs of his original artwork pages, so you get a look at his unfiltered talent as he works out his characters and their expressions. In my book, he's the definitive Conan artist and this peek into his process is manna from comic heaven.

Art teacher Emilio Soltero has assembled a look at John Buscema's creative mind. While many sketch collections are just a bunch of pictures, this really does carefully reveal the thought process and construction behind John's finished artwork.

Here he experiments with lighting, with faces, with styles of inking, with unique poses, with beautiful ladies and a rogue's gallery of portraits. There's an unpublished Ms. Marvel cover, preliminaries for a Gunslingers cover, partially finished inks on pencils...plus testimonials by fellow artists and inkers who have rendered John's work.

This is a treat for any Bucema fan.
