BRASSAÏ: Paris
By Jean-Claude Gautrand.
Brassaï's Universal Art.
Brassaï (1899-1984) was a Hungarian-born artist who adopted Paris and became one of its most celebrated photographers. A member of Paris' cultural elite, he scoured the streets and bars of Paris with camera in hand, unabashedly capturing the city's denizens in their natural habitats. This is an extensive selection of his finest photos and an essay describing his life and work.
Henry Miller said-- "Brassaï is a living eye--his gaze pierces straight to the heart of truth in everything. Like a falcon, or a shark, we see him quiver, then plunge at reality." His first book of photographs was published in 1932 as Paris de nuit, and stories from his enduring friendship with Picasso was published in 1964 as Conversations avec Picasso. In addition to photos of Paris, there are photos of Miller, Picasso, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Matisse, Dali, Braque and more. Text in English, German and French.

A superb collection of vintage photos of Paris! He catches the night and the raw honesty of the people he photos. And just Paris in general, the homeless, the pushcarts, newstands--it is all here. Beautiful.
