Customer Reviews:
From: Bud Plant Posted: 12/23/08
Alex Toth lead a generation of artists in masterful art and storytelling. He stripped away extraneous details that subtracted from the flow of the story. Instead, he used light and darks, and dynamic perspective to pull the reader in.
As a result, his stories are far more readable today than most from the early 1950s. Perhaps only Harvey Kurtzman in his masterful EC stories, did as meticulous a job.
What makes this series a joy is also it's not just clips of his artwork, but it shows exactly what his intention was, from page one to story end. Even the romance stories here are very special. Each story here is beautifully rendered and flowing in the way that very few artists besides a Frank Miller or a Will Eisner can achieve.
You'll enjoy these. The price of admission at 25 is a bit high at first blush, but this is no quick flip-through art book. Here you get the main course 24 great stories from 1952-54, a high point of Alex's creativity. And this publisher rare prints more than a thousand copies or so, so each book can go out of print at any time.
